LED Installation in Lodi, NJ

LED installation in Lodi, NJ: recessed lights, fixtures, dimmers and outdoor lighting, installed by licensed electricians from Astro Group Electric.

LED lighting installed properly

Screwing an LED bulb into an old lamp is easy. Installing LED lighting that looks good, dims smoothly, never flickers and stays safe for years takes a little more. That is the work we do at Astro Group Electric, a licensed and insured electrical company based in Lodi with more than fifteen years of experience in New Jersey homes and businesses.

We install recessed lights, ceiling fixtures, under-cabinet lighting, outdoor and security lights, and LED retrofits for existing fixtures. Whether you are lighting a single kitchen or a whole floor of a renovation, the goal is the same: the right amount of light where you need it, wiring that is done to code, and controls that are simple to use.

Recessed lighting in older Lodi homes

Recessed lights are the most common LED project we do in houses. Modern LED wafer lights are only about an inch deep and mount directly into the ceiling drywall, so they fit in places where older recessed cans never could, including under joists and in rooms with little space above the ceiling. That makes them a good fit for many of Lodi's older homes, where attic access is limited and ceilings are tight.

Older homes bring their own wiring considerations. A house built generations ago may have circuits that were extended many times, junctions buried in walls or original wiring that should not be loaded further. Before we add lights, we check what circuit they will be on, how much it already carries and whether the wiring feeding it is in sound condition. If something needs to be corrected, we tell you before we start rather than after.

Layout matters as much as the fixtures. Lights placed too far apart leave dark patches, and lights placed right against the walls cast harsh shadows. We plan spacing based on the size of the room, the ceiling height and how you use the space, then mark the positions with you before cutting a single hole.

Dimmers that work with LED

One of the most common complaints after a DIY LED upgrade is flickering or buzzing at low settings. That usually happens because the old dimmer was designed for incandescent bulbs and does not know how to handle the much smaller load an LED draws. Some LEDs also simply are not made to be dimmed.

We pair LED fixtures with dimmers made for them and check that the two are rated to work together. When it is set up correctly, LED lighting dims smoothly down to a low glow without flicker, hum or lights that suddenly cut out. If you already have LEDs that flicker, we can usually solve it by replacing the dimmer and confirming the lamps are dimmable.

Choosing color temperature room by room

LED lights come in a range of color temperatures, and picking the right one for each room makes a big difference to how your home feels. Warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, gives the soft, cozy light most people expect in living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral white, around 3500K to 4000K, works well in kitchens, bathrooms and home offices, where you want clearer light for tasks. Very cool light above 5000K tends to feel harsh in a home and is better kept for garages and workshops.

Many recessed LEDs now let you choose the color temperature with a small switch on the fixture, which is handy if you are unsure. It is also worth keeping color temperature consistent within a room. Mixing warm and cool fixtures in the same space is one of the most common reasons a newly lit room looks a little off.

Kitchens, bathrooms and under-cabinet lighting

Kitchens benefit from layered lighting: recessed lights for overall brightness, under-cabinet LED strips or puck lights for the counters, and a pendant or two over an island. Under-cabinet lighting in particular changes how a kitchen works, because it puts light right where you chop and cook instead of behind you, where your own body casts a shadow.

Bathrooms need fixtures rated for damp locations, and the area over a tub or shower needs fixtures rated for wet locations. We make sure the fixtures we install are rated for where they are going and that the circuits are protected as the electrical code requires in wet areas. Good vanity lighting also comes from the sides or above the mirror, not just from a single light overhead.

Outdoor and security lighting

LED is ideal for outdoor lighting because the fixtures last for years, handle cold weather well and use little power even when they are on all night. We install porch and entry lights, motion-sensor floodlights for driveways and side yards, path lighting and wall packs for garages and detached buildings.

Outdoor fixtures need weather-rated boxes, proper sealing and circuits protected for outdoor use. We also aim the lights so they cover your property without shining into your neighbors' windows, which matters on Lodi's closely spaced streets. Photocells and timers can switch the lights on at dusk and off at a set hour, so you never have to remember.

Retrofitting the fixtures you already have

You do not always need new fixtures to get the benefits of LED. Old recessed cans can take LED retrofit trims that screw into the existing socket and clip into the can, which gives a cleaner look and better light without opening the ceiling. Fluorescent fixtures in basements, garages and laundry rooms can be converted to LED, and older ceiling fixtures can be fitted with LED lamps that are rated for enclosed fixtures.

That last point matters. Many standard LED bulbs are not rated for fully enclosed fixtures, and the trapped heat shortens their life. We use lamps and retrofit kits designed for the fixture they go into, so your new lights last as long as they should.

Smart switches and lighting controls

An LED installation is a good moment to make your lighting easier to control. Smart switches and dimmers replace ordinary wall switches and let you turn lights on and off from your phone, set schedules or connect them to a voice assistant. They are handy for porch lights that should come on at dusk, for checking that you turned the lights off after leaving the house, and for setting a lower level in a hallway at night.

Many smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, which some older Lodi homes do not have. We check what your boxes contain and choose devices that will work with your wiring, rather than finding out after you have bought a set of switches that will not fit. Motion-sensor switches are another simple option for laundry rooms, closets, garages and basements, where hands are often full and lights are often left on.

For larger rooms with several groups of lights, such as an open kitchen and living area, we can set up multi-way switching so each group can be controlled from more than one entrance. It is a small detail that makes a room much easier to live in.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my LED lights flicker when I dim them?

Usually because the dimmer was made for incandescent bulbs and cannot handle an LED's small load, or the bulbs are not dimmable. Replacing the dimmer with an LED-rated one and using dimmable lamps normally fixes it.

Can you add recessed lights to an older home without an attic?

Often, yes. Thin LED wafer lights mount right into the ceiling and need very little space above it. We check the wiring and circuit first to make sure they can be added safely.

What color temperature should I choose?

Warm white (2700K to 3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms, while neutral white (3500K to 4000K) works well in kitchens, bathrooms and offices. Keep one color temperature per room for a consistent look.
