When an electrical problem cannot wait

Most electrical problems are an inconvenience: a dead outlet, a light that stopped working, a switch that feels loose. Some are not. A burning smell, sparks, a scorched outlet or half your house losing power can point to a fault that puts your home or business at real risk, and those need a licensed electrician quickly.

Signs of an electrical emergency

Call an electrician right away if you notice any of the following. A burning or hot plastic smell near an outlet, switch, panel or light fixture. Sparks or arcing when you plug something in or flip a switch. An outlet or switch plate that is warm or hot to the touch, discolored or melted. A breaker that trips again immediately after you reset it, or a breaker panel that buzzes, crackles or feels hot.

Partial power loss is another warning sign that people often misread. If some rooms or appliances suddenly lose power while others keep working, or lights grow very bright and then very dim, the problem may be a failing connection in your panel or in the service coming into the building. That kind of fault can damage appliances and electronics and can overheat wiring, so it should be checked the same day.

Water is the last one. If water is leaking near outlets, fixtures or the panel, or your basement has flooded above the level of any outlets or equipment, treat it as an emergency and keep away from the wet area until the power is safely off.

What to do while you wait

Your safety comes first. If you smell burning or see smoke, get everyone out of the building and call 911 before calling us. If there is no fire but a single circuit is causing trouble, switch that breaker off at the panel and leave it off. If you cannot tell which circuit it is, or the panel itself is hot, buzzing or wet, do not touch it. Wait for an electrician.

Unplug appliances and electronics on the affected circuits if you can do so without touching anything wet or damaged. Do not try to reset a breaker more than once. A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job by cutting off a fault, and forcing it back on can let that fault overheat the wiring inside your walls.

Flooding and electrical safety in Lodi

Areas of Lodi are prone to flooding during heavy rain, and floodwater and electricity are a dangerous combination. If water has reached your basement or ground floor, stay out of standing water anywhere near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel. If the panel is in the flooded area, do not try to switch it off yourself. Call the utility to disconnect power to the building if needed, and call us.

Once the water is gone, the electrical system still needs to be checked before it is turned back on. Water leaves mud and corrosion inside outlets, breakers and junction boxes, and equipment that has been submerged often needs to be replaced rather than dried out. We inspect affected circuits, replace damaged devices and confirm the system is safe before restoring power.

Common causes we find

Loose connections are behind a large share of urgent calls. A wire that is not tight on an outlet or breaker heats up as current flows through it, and over time it can scorch the device and the wire around it. Backstabbed outlets, where wires are pushed into holes on the back instead of wrapped around the screws, are a frequent culprit in homes.

Overloaded circuits are another. Space heaters, window air conditioners and kitchen appliances draw a lot of power, and when several share one circuit, the wiring runs hot. In older Lodi homes, circuits were often designed for far less than a modern household uses. Failing breakers, damaged extension cords used as permanent wiring, and rodents chewing through wire insulation round out the list.

Problems on the service side, such as a loose or damaged service cable or a failing connection at the meter, can cause the dimming and partial outages described above. Some of that equipment belongs to the utility and some belongs to you, and we help you figure out which so the right people can fix it quickly.

Storms and power outages

After a storm, it is not always clear whether a power outage is the utility's problem or yours. If your whole street is dark, it is almost certainly the utility. If your neighbors have power and you do not, or only part of your building has power, the fault may be on your side, at the service cable, the meter base or the panel.

Watch for fallen branches resting on the service drop, the cable running from the pole to your building. Stay well away from any wire on the ground and report it to the utility immediately. Once the utility side is safe, we can repair a damaged service mast, meter base or panel so power can be restored to your building.

Emergencies at businesses

For a business, an electrical failure can mean closing the doors, losing refrigerated stock or leaving staff unable to work. We understand the pressure that creates. When a business calls with an urgent problem, our first goal is to make the site safe and restore power to what you need to operate, then plan any larger repair at a time that suits you.

Restaurants, retail shops, offices and warehouses along Route 17, Route 46 and Main Street each have their own critical circuits, whether that is walk-in coolers, point-of-sale systems or loading dock doors. Tell us what matters most when you call so we can focus there first.

Preventing the next emergency

Many electrical emergencies give warnings before they become urgent. Lights that dim when an appliance starts, outlets that feel loose when you plug something in, a faint smell near the panel or a breaker that trips once in a while are all worth mentioning to an electrician before they turn into a midnight call.

After we handle an emergency, we look at what caused it and whether the same problem is likely elsewhere. If one backstabbed outlet has scorched, others in the house may be heading the same way. If a circuit was overloaded, we can suggest a dedicated circuit for the appliance that pushed it over. For older homes and buildings in Lodi, a general safety check of the panel, the main connections and a sample of outlets and switches is a sensible step, especially if you have recently moved in or the wiring has never been looked at.

Adding protection where the code now calls for it also helps. Ground fault protection in kitchens, bathrooms, basements and outdoors, and arc fault protection on bedroom circuits, both cut power quickly when they detect a dangerous fault. We can tell you where your property has them and where it would benefit from adding them.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hot outlet an emergency?

Yes. An outlet or switch that feels warm or hot usually has a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. Turn off that breaker and call an electrician instead of continuing to use it.

My breaker keeps tripping. Can I keep resetting it?

No. Reset it once at most. A breaker that trips again is cutting off a real fault, and forcing it back on can overheat the wiring. Leave it off and have the circuit checked.

My basement flooded. Is it safe to turn the power back on?

Not until an electrician has checked it. Water leaves mud and corrosion inside outlets, breakers and boxes, and some equipment must be replaced. Stay out of standing water near anything electrical.
